Careers Day at Dubai Campus, 2012
Gain valuable advice from prospective employers and get to know the industry within. Always worth the effort on the part of the student even if its just collecting business cards since you never know when luck has the final say.
The aim of this event is to enable employers to engage with students and attract new talent direct from the University; to promote your company and any future employment, internship, or graduate programmes you may offer; to give our students first hand exposure and networking opportunities with a range of employers and industries; and to raise employability skills through a variety of workshops also held during the day.
Date: 14th March, 2012 (10am – 3pm)
Venue: Heriot-Watt University, Dubai, U.A.E.

Re: Careers Day at Dubai Campus, 2012
Career fairs are pretty pointless. Instead of calling a million compaines with no potential vacancies, the University should try and bring in definite placements even if there are only a few. Secondly, the purpose for most companies at the fair is to hunt for fresh interns for getting the job done without having to make it a paid exercise, which brings about its own disadvantages in today's fast paced world.
To summarize, career fairs without definite employment guarantee, only keeps a student in dark and nothing else.

Would you be confident sitting an interview with a company directly without having any practice on the know-how? The point of career fairs is to indulge students in direct confrontations with prospective employers. You have to soak in the atmosphere with an open mind and get to know how the industry behaves and works rather than going shopping for jobs.
DO NOT be completely money minded as it will not lead you anywhere, if you take the advice.

Re: Careers Day at Dubai Campus, 2012
Good luck to everyone attending. Make the most of whatever it is! The below could come in as a helpful guide.
- View each career fair website (list/links), read about attending employers.
- Employers are not just limited to "companies."
- Some are government agencies; some are non-profits.
- Determine if any match your career interests and you match their needs.
- If you find a fit with even one attending employer, you have a reason to go!
- Know that the employment world is not divided by major or college!
- Understand that not all types of employers attend career fairs.
- Discover that many varied ones do! Research each in advance.
- To make a good (or great) impression in person (especially important if your resume doesn't necessarily stand out from the crowd).
- To see that the real world is not organized by major: you don't necessarily have to be a business major to go to Business Horizons, and you don't necessarily have to be an engineering major to go to Engineering Expo.
- To learn more about employers than you can learn from their websites. You learn about the culture of an organization when you meet their people, and you can ask questions.
- Much of the job search process
- To be effective at a career fair, you need to be ready to make a good impression in person.
- Know which employers are attending.
- See the career fair / job fair list that links to each event web site.
- Read the website for each fair; it should have a list of the attending employers with other relevant information — like positions for which they are hiring and majors sought. If there's no information within a month of the fair, contact the sponsor and ask.
- Do enough research to make "A" &"B" lists of employers to meet.
- Have plenty of copies of your resume ready. You might need to prepare more than one version.
- Watch your manners and mannerisms — all those things your parents drilled into you when you were a child (and a few more).
- Don't be misled into thinking of the fair as a social event.
- Carry a simple padfolio to keep your resumes organized and ready.
- Have an open mind.
- Prepare well. Wouldn't you be happier being in the prepared group?

Heriot-Watt Dubai Hosts Careers Day
Heriot-Watt University’s Dubai Campus hosted its Annual Careers Day recently with organisations from a wide range of industries in attendance. Representatives from oil and gas, finance, IT, marketing, fashion, the built environment, and even life coaching, gave talks and conducted workshops, offering invaluable advice to students on taking the first steps into the daunting world of work.
The Careers Day gave students direct exposure and networking opportunities with organisations such as Schlumberger, Baker Hughes, Weatherford & Majid Al Futtaim, as well as supporting the development of their networking and employability skills, which the Careers Advisory service promotes on a daily basis.
Kathryn Taylor, Student Experience Officer, responsible for careers advice at Heriot-Watt Dubai Campus, said: “This year’s Careers Day was the most successful yet with a large number of renowned companies in attendance offering expert advice to Heriot-Watt students, helping them to make the all important decision of what steps to take after graduating from university and seeking employment.”
First year student Akbar Hossain studying Civil Engineering attended the fair and was one of the first students to secure an internship at the event. Akbar said: “This is my first time coming to a event like this and I thank Heriot-Watt for organising this for us students. I am very excited about the opportunity and will definitely attend next years event”.
Heriot-Watt University is increasingly introducing new ways to assist students and graduates seeking employment and internships within their respective fields.
